Film Markets in the Age of Digital Market Places and the Platform Business Model

Digital marketplaces and platform business models are ubiquitous today- from the most valuable start-ups that are disrupting traditional markets, to established companies that have shifted their business model from a traditional linear to a platform-based approach. But what exactly is a digital market place, and how does the platform business model work? How do they fundamentally change the interaction between buyers and sellers, how do they impact the balance between demand and offer? The platform business model does not own the means of production, but rather creates and facilitates the means of connection. René will explore how a traditional film market could be if successfully transformed into a platform and what this would means for the work of producers.

With René Schäfer, Digital Transformation Expert at hy - the Axel Springer ecosystem firm (Berlin)
Moderated by Erwin M. Schmidt, Managing Director of the German Producers Association

Working with Streaming Services: Terms of Trade, Best Practice Charter or More Regulation?

The British Codes of Practice from 2002 have fundamentally impacted the market dynamics and changed the relationship between broadcasters and producers in the UK and have inspired similar agreements in many countries.

The basic assumption of this mother of all Terms of Trade is that content diversity and innovation from an audience perspective will only happen if content producers get a significant financial reward and receive a pioneer profit for their efforts and innovations.

Streaming platforms have until now not entered into collective agreements with producers and their associations, standard Terms of Trade have not yet been agreed on. Alexandra and Philipp will explore potential strategies of how independent producers can protect themselves against unfavorable conditions (low financial reward, lack of retention of rights, etc.) and discuss with the audience the potential design of such Terms of Trade or a Charter on working with streaming services. They will also share and discuss the most important issues concerning the relationship between the independent sector and streaming and PayTV services which have been identified in the frame of the 1st European Film Politics Seminar (organized by the European Film Market on 20 February).

With Alexandra Lebret , Managing Director of the European Producers Club and Philipp Kreuzer, Producer at Maze Pictures, Member of the Board of the German Producers Association
Moderated by Erwin M. Schmidt, Managing Director of the German Producers Association
