The impressive warehouses area within the Free Port, Hamburg´ s famous “Speicherstadt”, was built at the end of the 19th century and is still being used as a depot for goods from around the globe. Coffee, tea, spices and rugs are stored in 17 red brick warehouses with copper roofs. The warehouses are located between a street and the canal. Many bridges, cobble-stone roads and the picturesque facades of the houses adorned with ceramics and tiles in a neo-gothic style evoke the spirit and atmosphere of the old Hanseatic city. In 2017 "Speicherstadt" was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
