Im Juni 1998 begann der Abriss des alten Volksparkstadion und ein neues, modernes Stadion mit einer langen Namensgeschichte entstand. 12 Jahre später steht das komplett fertige Stadtion und ist nicht nur Stadion für die Stadt, sondern auch ein kleines Schmuckstück, welches hin und wieder auch für Konzerte genutzt wird. Ingesamt fasst die Arena 55.000 Plätze, 50 Logen bieten Platz für 10-20 Menschen, Anzahl kann aber auch erweitert werden. Zudem gibt es 320 lfm Theken für fastfood, 1000 qm Fläche Gastronomie / VIP Restaurant und 1.500 qm Tagungsräume. Das freitragende Dach liegt bei einer Höhe von 35m. Seitdem Klaus-Michael Kühne die Namensrechte des Stadions bis 2019 erwarb, heißt das Stadion wieder Volksparkstadion.
