The castle and the Rantzaubau are situated on the site of the old castle of Kiel. The castle, which was destroyed during the war, was rebuilt in its current form between 1961 and 1965. Today there is a restaurant in the building with a viewing terrace and several concert halls. The adjoining palace garden was the first park in Kiel and is now divided by a traffic road.
