The town of Südstrand on the Schleswig-Holstein holiday island Fehmarn was one of the main locations for the feature film 3 Days in Quiberon by Emily Atef about three consequential days in the life of Romy Schneider.
Location scout and designer Herbert Müller alongside set designer Silke Fischer, who recently did the production design for Toni Erdmann and Farewell to Europe, transformed a protected historic landmark, an empty guest house, into a hotel with a view of the sea. The guest house as well as the neighbouring IFA holiday resort had been designed in 1968 by Arne Jacobsen. According to Dresden-based Rohfilm Factory's producer Karsten Stöter "This building in Südstrand was a complete stroke of luck for us. You certainly need to have a vivid imagination to visualize a lobby in such an empty space. But this is where we see Silke Fischer's true artistry".
What was initially planned as an on-location shoot became a studio shoot with three to four different sets that could be used simultaneously for shooting and setting up, including the grand hotel lobby, a hotel room with a sea view, a hotel suite, two further rooms, and a bathroom. "For the sea view, we recreated a 4 by 10 metre backdrop using an original photo of the Atlantic", says Silke Fischer.
The film is based on true events and recounts three days in the life of Romy Schneider. In 1981 the famous actress, played by Marie Bäumer, spends some time in Brittany to rejuvenate at a health resort before her next film shoot. Her lifelong friend Hilde (Birgit Minichmayr) visits her, as do STERN magazine journalist Michael Jürgs (Robert Gwisdek) and the celebrity photographer Robert Lebeck (Charly Hübner). Three unforgettable days ensue. The resulting epochal interview where Romy reckons with the German press turns into an in-depth stocktaking of her own life story. This black-and-white film shot in Cinemascope will be released theatrically by Prokino in 2018. Beta Cinema is the world distributor.
